"First Meaning" makes reference to two texts by Roland Barthes, "Camera Lucida" and "The Third Meaning."
"Camera Lucida" is a text built upon Barthes' relationship to his mother where upon seeing a photo of her as a young
woman he is sent on a textual musing about photography. In "The Third Meaning", Barthes hypothesizes three essential
levels of meaning in an image, the first being the level of communication.
By endlessly searching, struggling and often failing to obtain the desired image, I watched my father struggle with images
and the difficulty in mutual communication, as one often does with one's closest family members. It's a loving homage, in
which I comfortably play the role of a petulant impatient son.
